Dowland’s solo lute music is extraordinarily varied and ranges from light frivolous pieces to profound works expressing the darkest melancholy. It is characterized by an uncommon tunefulness and many of the pieces were given texts to become lute songs, one example being his famous pavan Lachrimæ which he also published as the song Flow my teares.

Notes [ edit ] ^ While orthographic evidence from Dowland's time strongly suggests a pronunciation of / ˈ d oʊ l ən d / for the last name, there is no consensus on the correct pronunciation. Dowland did not play the harpsichord and Byrd did not play the lute it is easy to see how volumes could be (and are) devoted to these impossible combinations. Like Byrd, Dowland cared very much about having his works printed and played as he wrote them. How surprising it is to come across composers like Dowland and Byrd, in light of our modern-day Dowland’s comments on strings provide us with a large proportion of the tantalizingly little information we have about strings. The full text of these comments can be found here. In Dowland’s time all lute strings were made from gut and there were no metal-wound strings.
